Sample group classes with Kay Newhouse and Matthew Smith:

“Smart and Elastic/ Not Made of Plastic”
Develop elasticity and ease of movement for both leaders and followers, while refining your sense of the pervasive mechanics and fundamental language of today’s West Coast Swing. It’s never been so easy to be awesome.

“Let the Music Move You”
Match music to movement with several playful exercises that will help you hear the picture created in the music, show what you hear, and bring your partner into the moment. Whether you are a leader or a follower you'll step away from this workshop with an extended vocabulary for making your dance more musical - and more fun!

"Fill the Space" Followers' Styling Workshop
Make slow music your friend! This workshop explores body styling options and syncopation tools for followers in the wide open stretches of slow music. FOLLOWERS ONLY, but visitors to the other role are welcome even if it's not your usual mode.

“Zombies vs Humanity”
Can we possibly use an apocalyptic living versus undead battle as a deep exercise to improve leading and following while unleashing collaborative creativity? Yes. Yes, we can. This playful workshop will expand your ability to lead and follow complex variations with ease. Battle gear optional. Teamwork required.

"Adapt to the Music" class series

Fast, slow, funky, breaky! We explore how to change our dancing when the music changes in this series. While these workshops are designed to complement one another, commitment to all three class hours is not required for attendance.

Session 1:

“Adapt to the Music: Silky Slow

The song is slow, the music flows, but do you? Every step you take, every move you make is meaningful when the beats are this far apart. We move and style through the wide open spaces of slow music, with patterns and shaping for both leaders and followers to make it all smooth and cool.

Session 2:

"Adapt to the Music: Sneaky Fast"

Triplesteptriplestep: this song is FAST and you need moves that work before it’s too late! Join us to explore body mechanics, connection strategies, pattern choices and styling that make your stuff work at hyper-fun speed.

Session 3:

"Adapt to the Music: Breaky Breaks"

There are twelve breaks in this song and you only have moves for two? Come with us as we play our way through finding options for illustrating the dramatic moments in the song, whether or not we knew they were coming. By the time we’re done you’ll be seeking out the breaky songs for the opportunity to play.

"Where Ya Headed?"
All about action/reaction between leader and follower, this class explores ways we can take care of our partners of ANY level while adding creative elements and playing with the structure of our dance. Everybody's voice matters!
